My
Story
I grew up in a family where historic cars and motoring were part of the fabric of life. My father, a trained engineer always had projects on the go in the garage. It was his series 2 Lotus 7 though that gave me the bug for bracing, visceral motoring. I clearly remember the actual moment, aged 8 descending through Craner Curves at Donington Park on a track day with my father at the wheel. I was unable to comprehend how we weren’t flying off the track at such speeds. I had to turn my head sideways so I could breath but the exhilaration still lives with me now.
We were stalwart VSCC members like my Grandfather and his brother Dudley Gahagan. Grandfather George competed in an Amilcar Riley (appropriately nicknamed ’The Quickly Car’) and an Austin 7 Ulster, preferring not to risk his 2300 8C Alfa in combat. My Father progressed through F3 500s, Austin 7 and Alvis to a Connaught F2 car. He felt enormously privileged to become chairman of the HGPCA with his supercharged HWM Tasman GP car. Due to health reasons he could no longer race so I was lucky enough to take on those duties, the highlight without doubt being able to race a number of times at the Goodwood Revival. I guess I’d earned my stripes by racing a Riley Imp and Alvis with the VSCC.
The responsibilities of fatherhood and a career in TV meant racing took a backseat but I still attended the events and the enthusiasm never diminished. I now have a Lenham Le Mans Coupe which I hope, now the children are older, will allow me once again to be part of the historic racing fraternity.
